★ Thiru Kolanjiappar Government Arts College, Vriddhachalam was established in the year 1966 as a Pre-University College at the Boys Higher Secondary School campus in the municipal town of Vriddhachalam with the vision of providing quality higher education to rural and economically weaker students.
★ The vast area of more than 42 acres of land for constructing the permanent college campus was generously donated by the authorities of Sri Vriddhagireeswarar Temple which greatly contributed to the development and growth of the institution.
★ The authorities of Sri Kolanjiappar Temple also donated a sum of Rupees Two Lakhs with the support of which undergraduate programmes such as B.A. History and B.A. Tamil Literature were introduced in the year 1969.
★ The college was shifted to its present spacious campus in the year 1971 and the B.Com programme was also introduced during the same academic year to expand opportunities for students in Commerce and Business Education.
★ The institution continued its academic expansion by introducing B.Sc. Mathematics in 1972, B.Sc. Zoology in 1979 and B.Sc. Physics in 1980 which strengthened Science education in the region.
★ Postgraduate education started with M.A. Tamil Literature in the year 1981 and later the institution introduced several PG programmes to meet the growing educational needs of students.
★ Full Time M.Phil. programme in Tamil Literature has been conducted from the academic year 1993-1994. Part Time M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes in Tamil Literature are also being offered successfully along with Full Time Ph.D programmes introduced from 2000-2001.
★ B.Sc. Computer Science programme was introduced during the academic year 1997-1998 to promote modern technology education and computer literacy among rural students.
★ During the academic year 2005-2006, new programmes including B.A. English Literature, B.Sc. Chemistry, M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Com were introduced which further enhanced the academic profile of the institution.
★ From the academic year 2007-2008, the Shift System was introduced in the college. All existing UG and PG programmes are conducted in Shift I, while selected programmes such as B.A. Tamil Literature, B.A. English Literature, B.Com, B.Sc. Mathematics and B.Sc. Computer Science are conducted in Shift II.
★ The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited the institution in March 2005 and awarded the college with B+ Grade for its commitment towards academic excellence, discipline, infrastructure and student development.
★ Today, Thiru Kolanjiappar Government Arts College stands as one of the leading Government Arts Colleges in Tamil Nadu, continuously empowering thousands of students through quality education, research, discipline, leadership and social responsibility.
